Baseball Drops Season-Opening Doubleheader at Winston-Salem State

Missiti records three hits on the afternoon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – The Post University baseball team was defeated by Winston-Salem State 3-2 and 7-1 on Sunday afternoon to open the 2018 campaign.

Game One – Winston Salem State 3, Post 2, F/9
Senior Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) singled up the middle with one out in the top of the second. Freshman Danny Di Marzo (Fishkill, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line in his first collegiate at-bat to drive home Wright and put the Eagles in front 1-0.

Winston-Salem St. tied the game in the bottom of the second and looked to capitalize on a three-base error and walk to begin the third. A one-out walk loaded the bases for the Rams but junior Tyler Kovalewich (Colonia, N.J.) notched a strikeout and flyout to end the threat.

Junior John Cartagena Jr. (Danbury, Conn.) smacked a two-out hit up the middle in the fifth. Junior Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) drove him home with a double off the right field wall as the Eagles led 2-1 through five. The Rams tied the game again in the sixth on a two-out wild pitch.

The Eagles put runners on in the eighth and ninth, but neither advanced past second.

Sophomore Tyler Boisvert (Prospect, Conn.) was perfect with four strikeouts through his first 2.1 innings of relief, but allowed a single followed by a walk-off triple in the bottom of the ninth.

Junior Brett Pisaneschi (East Quogue, N.Y.) pitched well in relief of Kovalewich, allowing no hits and one run and a walk in three innings while striking out four.

Game Two – Winston Salem State 7, Post 1, F/7
The Rams' leadoff hitter Randy Norris launched a homer to left field to begin the home half of the first. Winston-Salem added another in the third after a leadoff double came home to score on an Eagles' error. Post was held hitless for the first three innings.

Cartagena started things off for Post in the fourth with a single to center. Missiti and senior Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) followed with base hits to load the bases. A wild pitch by Jalen Scott brought home the first run for the Eagles to make the score 2-1, but Post was unable to add another as it stranded the bases loaded.

Two errors by the Eagles allowed the Rams to add three runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 5-1. Jaxson Snider drove in two more runs on a two-out single in the fifth to make the score 7-1 Rams.
Junior Evan Schaffner (Boynton Beach, Fla.) had a pinch-hit single to start the sixth and made it to third after a ground out and wild pitch but was stranded. The Eagles went down in order in the seventh.

Senior Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) started and threw three innings allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits.

Post returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. for one nine-inning game against Winston-Salem St.
