WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team won its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener 3-2 against Nyack Wednesday night at the Drubner Center. Junior
Madison Hunziker (Sacramento, Calif.) recorded season-highs with 22 kills and 19 digs in the victory.
The Eagles took the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-19. Post fell behind 6-4 to start the first, but responded with an 11-1 run to gain control. Freshman
Kyla Knight (Seabrook, Texas) had back-to-back aces and junior Sara Seger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) landed four kills to help build the lead. Freshman
Ashley Levatino (Holtsville, N.Y.) closed the set with a block and kill for the final two points.
Another run by the Eagles in the second set flipped an 8-6 deficit to a 16-9 lead. Junior
Brianna Root (Bristol, Conn.) added to her CACC-leading ace total with two during the stretch. The Warriors pulled within three points, but Post rolled to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Post looked to have things under control as it led 18-11 in the third set. Nyack scored the next seven points to tie set. Down 21-20, Hunziker capped a 4-0 run with a kill to setup match point for the Eagles. The Warriors once again tied the score at 24-24. The teams traded points until the Warriors scored the final two to send the match to a fourth set with a 28-26 victory.
The Eagles led 18-17 in the fourth until a 6-0 stretch by Nyack put the visitors in front for good. Post would pull within one at 23-22, but was unable to get closer, dropping the set 25-23.
A service error by Post gave the Warriors an 8-5 lead in the final set. Two kills by Seger and an ace from senior
Sarah Ryder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) led the Eagles back to take a 9-8 lead. The teams went back and forth from there and Nyack led 15-14. Post scored the final three points of the night, two on blocks by Levatino, to survive with a 17-15 victory.
Post had a season-high 14 services aces, led by Root with four. She also added 54 assists and 12 digs. Seger had 14 kills, two aces, three blocks, and 10 digs. Levatino landed nine kills, two solo blocks, and five block assists. Knight chipped in with nine kills, two aces, and 10 digs.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow night on the road at New Haven. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
