WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Post University volleyball team was defeated by in-state rival New Haven 3-1 on the road Thursday night. The Eagles fall to 3-7 on the young season. Post won the first set 25-21, but dropped the final three 25-19, 25-16, and 25-19.
An ace by senior
Kerrin Kallmann (Lake Grove, N.Y.) capped an early run as Post built an 8-4 lead to start the first set. Junior
Sarah Seger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) landed three straight kills to spark a 5-0 spurt as the Eagles extended their lead to 13-5.
Post led 15-9 before a 7-0 run by the Chargers put the Eagles down one. The Eagles gained back control and ended the set on a 10-5 run. Freshman
Kyla Knight (Seabrook, Texas) had three kills down the stretch.
New Haven opened a 6-2 lead in the second before the Eagles climbed back in with the help of some Charger errors to pull in front 10-9. New Haven continued to pull ahead, but Post was able to stay within one point. Knight blocked an attack to make the score 19-18 in favor of New Haven. The Eagles would score just one more point as they fell 25-19.
Neither team could gain control early in the third as they traded three point leads. Sophomore
Shannon Veale (Toms River, N.J.) had an ace and kill as part of a 5-1 run to put the Eagles in front 12-11. New Haven scored the next four points and Post was unable to record as the Chargers took a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The final set began just like the third with neither team able to put the other away. Down 16-14, kills by Seger and Knight tied the set at 16. Post would score just three points the rest of the way.
Junior
Madison Hunziker (Sacramento, Calif.) led Post with 12 kills and three service aces. Sophomore
Brianna Root (Bristol, Conn.) put up 38 assists and 10 digs. Freshman
Ashley Levatino (Holtsville, N.Y.) had seven kills and did not commit an attack error.
Post returns to action on Tuesday on the road against Caldwell. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
