FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Post University women's volleyball split two matches on the first day of the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Friday. The Eagles outlasted the Sharks 3-2 in their opener before falling to St. Anselm 3-0 in match two.
Post 3, Nova Southeastern 2
Post fell behind early 6-2 in the first set, but a four-point run helped by three Shark errors tied the set. Down 20-17, the Eagles score twice off an NSU error and a block by sophomore
Ann Marie Nelson (Draper, Utah) and junior
Brianna Root (Bristol, Conn.) to pull within one, but dropped the first set 25-19.
Senior
Kerrin Kallmann (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and junior
Madison Hunziker (Sacramento, Calif.) each had two early kills as Post opened a 9-3 lead in the second set. The Sharks pulled within two at 9-7, but Post would never trail as it rolled to a 25-14 win to tie the match. With the Eagles ahead 14-11 in the third set after a kill by Hunziker, Nova Southeastern reeled off 10 straight point to grab control and earned a 25-20 win.
The teams traded points to begin the fourth set and NSU pulled in front 10-8. Hunziker had four kills and a block as part of a 6-0 run that gave Post a lead it would not relinquish as it forced a fifth set with a 25-22 victory.
In the final set the score was tied 5-5 before Post scored four straight capped by a kill from junior
Sarah Seger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) to give the Eagles control. She scored the final kill of the match also to give Post a 15-9 victory.
Hunkizer scored 18 kills and 16 digs in her Post debut. Seger added 11 kills, 10 digs, and three aces. Root put up 39 assists and had 17 digs.
St. Anselm 3, Post 0
Post struggled out of the gate in the second match of the day falling behind 15-4 in the first set before dropping it 25-12. Root had two aces and a block to start set two as the Eagles jumped ahead 4-0.
The Hawks began to close in but kills by Nelson and Seger put Post ahead 9-6. With the Eagles in front 10-8, St. Anselm staged a 17-6 run to close the set out and go ahead 2-0.
Post fell behind in the third set 11-5. Root scored two aces and Hunziker had two kills to cut the deficit to 11-10. The Eagles were down, 16-13 until five straight point gave them their first lead of the match at 18-16. St. Anselm battled back to tie the match at 21-21. Service errors gave the Eagles one point leads at 22-21 and 23-22, but they were unable to send the match to a fourth set.
Hunziker had 11 kills in the loss. Freshman
Kyla Knight (Seabrook, Texas) added six kills. Freshman
Suzy Boulay (Kingston, N.Y.) and Root each had 8 digs.
Post returns to action at the NSU Shark Invitational tomorrow against St. Leo at 11:30 a.m. and American International at 4 p.m.
