FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Post University women's volleyball team dropped two matches on Saturday at the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational. The Eagles fell to St. Leo and American International 3-0 on the final day of the tournament.
St. Leo 3, Post 0
St. Leo scored nine of the first 10 points to open the match with a 9-1 lead. Freshman
Ashley Levatino (Holtsville, N.Y.) had a kill and a block to help stop the run as Post cut the deficit to 9-4, but were unable to get closer a the Lions rolled to a 24-14 victory.
Post once again score the first point of the set as junior
Sarah Seger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) launched a kill to open the second. St. Leo answered back and pulled ahead 4-1. The teams traded points until a 5-0 run put the Lions ahead 15-7. The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 18-13 after a kill by sophomore Ann Marie Neslon (Draper, Utah), but would not get closer in a 25-16 defeat.
An early run in the third set led St. Leo to a 25-16 win. Junior
Madison Hunziker (Sacramento, Calif.) had six kills and three total blocks to lead Post. Senior
Sarah Ryder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) added 13 digs.
American International 3, Post 0
Post jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first set as Hunziker had two early kills. The Yellow Jackets scored the next five points and never trailed again on their way to a 25-18 victory.
AIC pulled in front 15-5 out of the gate in the second. The Eagles would not go quietly as Yellow Jacket errors and kills by Seger and Levatino powered a 10-3 run to make the score 18-15. Post was unable to cut more into the lead, falling 25-19.
The Yellow Jackets looked to run away with the final set, opening on a 17-4 run. Post chipped away at the deficit eventually making the second 21-10. A service error by AIC sparked a 7-0 stretch by the Eagles to make the set 21-17. Junior
Brianna Root (Bristol, Conn.) had two aces during the run. Post drew its closest at 22-19 after a late ace by Seger. The Yellow Jackets claimed the final set 25-21.
Hunziker had nine kills and seven digs to pace the Eagles. Root put up 18 assists to go with three aces and seven digs.
The Eagles return to action next weekend at the Post Eagles Invitational. Post will host Molloy (10 a.m.) and LIU Post (8 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Drubner Center.
