WATERBURY, Conn. – Post University Director of Athletics
Ronnie Palmer announced on Tuesday the hiring of
Joseph Newman as sprint football head coach. Newman is the fourth head coach in the eight-year history of the program.
"I am honored and humbled to become the head football coach here at Post University. I cannot thank President Don Mroz and
Ronnie Palmer enough for giving me the opportunity to lead this program. I want to thank my fiancée, Laura, for supporting and believing in me. I also want to thank my parents and family for molding me into the man I am today," said Newman.
Newman is no stranger to the Post University sprint football team as he has spent the last two seasons as the Eagles' offensive line coach and was also responsible for the kickoff, field goal, and extra point teams. Newman has mentored two All-Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) honorees in first teamer Anthony Lucia (Waterbury, Conn.) in 2015 and
Shane Celone (Burlington, Conn.), an honorable mention last year.
A native of Greer, S.C., Newman was a four-year starter at center at Greer High School. He helped lead the team to two state playoff appearances and in 2005 was named to the Greenville News Honor Roll. Newman also anchored the offensive line to help set a single-game school record in rushing yards.
Newman has been with Post University in the Financial Aid department since 2011 working closely with the athletic department.
"My goal for this program is to develop our players into champions on and off the field. I firmly believe that championships are won by building champions. We will teach sound, fundamental technique and help each player reach their highest potential on and off the field," added Newman.
The Eagles open their season on the road Saturday, Sept. 16 at Army West Point. Post begins its home schedule on Sept. 30 against the league's newest team Caldwell.
