Softball Splits at Home Against Felician

Schaffer smacks five hits on the afternoon

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Felician on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at LaMoy Field. Sophomore Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) tossed a four-hit shutout a 2-0 win in game one. The Eagles fell 5-4 in the finale.

Game One: Post 2, Felician 0
Senior Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) singled to lead off the game for the Eagles and after a sacrifice bunt moved her to second she stole third with one out. Owens was unable to advance as senior Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) legged out an infield single. Kresley attempted to steal second and was gunned down, but Owens raced home on the throw for the first run.

Back-to-back doubles by junior Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) and senior Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) brought home another run as the Eagles led 2-0 through an inning.

That would be all Post needed as Denis threw a gem. Nicole Spiegelberg doubled to left center to start the fourth for the Golden Falcons only extra-base hit of the day. In the bottom of the inning, senior Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) crushed a triple down the line in left, but she was stranded at third after two groundouts.

Felician threated in the seventh as Denis hit the leadoff batter Racquel Manzo. A sacrifice bunt by Monica Laverty was misplayed by the Eagles as the Golden Falcons put runners at the corners with no outs. Senior Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) threw Laverty out trying to steal second for the first out and the Eagles were able to come away with their first shutout victory of the year.

Game Two: Felician 5, Post 4
Two runs in the sixth inning gave the Golden Falcons a win in a back-and-forth game two. The Eagles pulled ahead in the first inning once again. Kresley and Schaffer each had two-out base hits before Ragazzone reached on an error to allow the first run to score. Post looked to add to the lead as a walk by sophomore Marissa Wilson (Holbrook, N.Y.) loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the frame.

Felician knotted the game in the second as Steph Donah doubled to right field and took a 3-1 lead in the third on another double and walk.

Kresley drew a four-pitch walk to start the bottom of the third and Schaffer moved her over with a single through the right side. Ragazzone cut the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI base hit to center. Freshman Brianna Rotunno (Staten Island, N.Y.) pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth to keep the game within one.

Schaffer smacked her third hit of the game, and fifth of the day to start an Eagles' rally in the fifth inning. Wilson tied the game on a double to right center and later came home for the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Felician loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth. Manzo tied the game with a single. The eventual winning came home on a fielder's choice. Senior Marissa Cammerano (Bedford, Mass.) advanced to third with one out in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to come home for the tying run. The Eagles went down in order in the seventh.

Post returns to the field for the third day in a row as it visits Southern New Hampshire tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
