WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader to Wilmington on Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The Eagles dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker in game two and lost the opener 10-0.
Wilmington scored three in the third and four in the fourth to put the Eagles away in game one. Post's best opportunity to score came in the fourth inning as junior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) led the frame off with a double to left center. She advanced to third, but was stranded after an infield popup.
The Eagles also put two on with one out in the fifth and were unable to break up the shutout.
The Wildcats struck first again in the second game of the day with a run on a squeeze play in the first. Senior
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) reached on a bunt single to bring the home half of the first. Schaffer tied the game 1-1 as she doubled off the wall in right. Two batters later Post took the lead as sophomore
Marissa Wilson (Holbrook, N.Y.) hit a hard line drive singled at the pitcher.
An error and a hit batter set the table for senior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) as she cleared the bases with a tripled to right that put the Eagles ahead 4-1 in the second inning
Freshman pitcher
Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) rolled through the Wildcat lineup after the first inning as she did not allow a baserunner until the fifth. Senior
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) crushed a homer just inside the foul pole in right to extend Post's lead to 6-1 heading into the sixth inning.
Wilmington scored three runs on three hits in the sixth to cut into the advantage. In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats added three more runs to pull in front 7-6.
Owens hit an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher to start the seventh. Freshman
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) moved the tying run to third with a sac bunt. After a strikeout, Schaffer drew a walk to keep the Eagles alive. A deep flyout to left field by Ragazzone ended the comeback bid.
Post is back in action at home tomorrow afternoon against Felician. First pitch at LaMoy Field is set for 1:30 p.m.
