WATERBURY, Conn. – With 4:14 to go in the second half and the Post University women's lacrosse team leading 15-14 over Holy Family at LaMoy Field on Thursday afternoon, the sky opened up and torrential downpours and lightning caused the game to be delayed for over an hour. When it was all said and done the Eagles prevailed for their first victory of the year.
Post jumped out to a 5-1 lead with 23:56 to go in the first quarter. Junior
Toni Deren (Greenlawn, N.Y.) scored twice early on and finished with three goals on the day. Holy Family cut the deficit to just one before scores by junior
Savannah Schwack (Manorville, N.Y.) and senior
Nicole Evans (Cortland, N.Y.) put the Eagles in front 7-4. Post led 7-6 at the half.
The teams traded goals to begin the second half, including a score by sophomore
Gabriela Middleton (Coral Springs, Fla.), her second of the year. With Post in front 10-8, Holy Family took control with five straight to pull in front 13-10 with 16:20 to go.
Freshman
Leona Stevens (Kingston, Mass.) stopped the run with her third of the game with 13:36 to play, but Holy Family answered right back.
Post scored the final four goals of the game to capture the victory. With 5:56 to go, Stevens found Evans from behind the goal as the senior shot home the eventual game-winner. After the delay, freshman
Alana Lopez (Wolcott, Conn.) made a key save on a late free-position attempt to keep the Eagles in front. She finished with 10 saves on the day.
The Eagles outshot Holy Family 38-26 and held a 35-27 advantage in ground balls, led by Middleton with seven. Sophomore
Aolani Hermosura (Stamford, Conn.) scored three goals and led the team with two caused turnovers.
Post looks to keep its winning ways going on Saturday as it visits Chestnut Hill. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
