PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Post University softball team split an important Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles took game one 5-3 and fell 3-2 in game two. Post (17-24, 11-13 CACC) still remains alive for a tournament berth heading into its regular season finale on Saturday.
Game One: Post 5, Philadelphia 3
A four-run sixth propelled the Eagles to a 5-3 victory in game one. Down 3-1 heading into the inning, senior
Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) doubled to left field to lead off. Senior
Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) followed with a four-pitch walk and the Eagles scored their first run on an error on a sacrifice but attempt.
Freshman
Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) hit a two-run single to right center to put Post ahead 4-3. After two outs, junior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) smacked an RBI double to add another run for the Eagles.
Post took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as senior
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored on a fielding error by the Rams' second baseman. Home runs by Courtney Wensel and Shannon Weaver put Philadelphia ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
Schaffer was stellar at the plate with three hits and threw three innings of two-hit shutout ball in relief to earn the victory in the circle.
Game Two: Philadelphia 3, Post 2
Philadelphia got all it needed on a three-run homer by Naomi Stas in the bottom of the second inning. Devorin crushed a 0-2 pitch down the left field line with two outs for her third home run of the season in the third inning to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Grzywna singled to left with one out in the fourth. Freshman
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Dawson made it a one-run game with an RBI single to left.
Schaffer tossed the final four innings of the game and allowed just one baserunner. The Eagles were not able to take advantage as they were sat down in order in the last three innings.
Post will host Holy Family at LaMoy Field on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
