WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team split its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) home finale on Saturday afternoon against Holy Family to clinch a bid into the conference tournament. The Eagles comeback fell short in an 8-5 loss in game one and earned a 5-0 win in game two.
Game One: Holy Family 8, Post 5
Things got off to a rough start for the Eagles in the opener as they fell behind 8-1 after three innings. Post scored in only run of the early innings as senior
Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) drew a bases loaded walk in the first.
Senior
Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch in the fourth. A base hit by senior
Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) moved her to third and senior
Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) drove Grzywna in on a sacrifice fly.
Post loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth after senior
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) was hit by a pitch. Grzywna came up big again with a single to right center that drove in two and cut the deficit to 8-4. Dawson drove in a run on a sacrifice fly for the second out. An error and a walk loaded the bases once again for the Eagles but they were unable to close the gap any further. Post left the bases loaded again in the sixth inning.
The Eagles scattered six hits in the game. Freshman
Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) and senior
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) each had doubles.
Game Two: Post 5, Holy Family
Post entered game two in a virtual must-win situation to remain alive for a postseason bid. Two errors by the Tigers in the bottom of the first allowed the Eagles to jump ahead 1-0.
Dawson doubled to right field to start the second and home to score the second Eagles' run on a base hit by Devorin. Holy Family put runners at second and third with one out in the third, but sophomore
Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) pitched out of the jam as the next two batters grounded out to her.
Senior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) doubled to center to start the fifth and came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Ragazzone as the Eagles extended their lead to 3-0. Kresley drove home the final two runs with a two-out single up the middle in the sixth.
Devorin, Kresley, and Dawson each had two hits in game two. Dennis pitched a gem as she allowed just six hits and struck out four in the shutout victory.
The Eagles will be the seventh or eighth seed in the CACC Tournament which begins on Thursday, May 4 at Georgian Court in Lakewood, N.J.
