DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Post University softball team swept regionally-ranked Mercy in a non-conference road doubleheader on Monday. Junior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) hit a home run and drove in five runs as the Eagles defeated the Mavericks 9-1 in five innings in the opener. Post won a back and forth game two 3-2.
Game One: Post 9, Mercy 1, F/5
The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first but were unable to score an early run. Mercy pulled in front 1-0 in the bottom of the second on a dropped fly ball by the Eagles.
Senior
Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) singled to right to start the third. Senior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) followed with a double to right center. Schaffer smacked her second home run of the year to right as the Eagles led 3-1.
Errors hurt the Mavericks in the fourth inning as the first two Eagles reach base by way of missteps by the defense. Post was able to score its first two runs in the inning without getting a hit. With runners on second and third and one out, Schaffer hit a two-run single to center field to extend the Post lead to 7-1.
Senior
Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) drew a walk with the bases loaded to add another run. Senior
Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) hit an RBI single in her second at-bat of the inning to make the score 9-1.
Senior
Karoline Prevost (Fall River, Mass.) shut Mercy down in the final two innings to secure the victory. She allowed just one unearned run and four hits while striking out two to earn her first win of the season. Every Eagle in the lineup reached base and Schaffer and Lennox each had three hits.
Game Two: Post 3, Mercy 2
Errors proved costly for Mercy again to start game two. Freshman
Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) doubled to open the game and came home to score on the throwing error by the Mavericks' first baseman as Post led 1-0 after the first.
Mercy tied the game in the second inning after a walk and a bunt single. Dawson threw out a Mavericks runner trying to steal second to end the frame. Devorin crushed her second double of the game with one out in the third. Kresley gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead on a base hit to left field. Mercy tied the game with an RBI base hit in the fifth.
Junior
Amanda Ely (Pittsfield, Mass.) reached and advanced to second on two errors by the Mercy third baseman in the seventh. Devorin legged out an infield single, her third hit of the game, to put runners at the corners with just one out. Senior
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) drove home the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice to second. Freshman
Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) shut the Mavericks down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Post returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Wednesday at Philadelphia. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
