Caldwell, N.J. – Two dominating pitching performances by senior
Alex Johnson (Bethel, Conn.) and junior
Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) gave the Post University baseball team 6-1 and 7-0 wins over Caldwell in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
In the first inning of game one, senior
Joey Picone (Washingtonville, N.Y.) took a pitch from Chris Gehrsitz over the wall to make it a 1-0 game. The Eagles would add another run on a wild pitch that scored sophomore
Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) followed by an RBI single by classmate Mike Munson (Plainville, Conn.) to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.
After giving up one run to Caldwell (5-12, 2-6 CACC) in the bottom of the second, Johnson settled down and didn't give up a run the rest of the way. The Eagles looked like they would be in trouble in the bottom of the seventh as the first two runners got on via a single and walk. However, Justin Jeannette hit a line drive tossed to second to get Jack Zosulis and Kevin Goldman at first for the rare 4-6-3 triple play. It was the second triple play turned in school history.
The Eagles added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Picone that scored junior
Luke Leonardi (Holbrook, N.Y.) and then would add two more runs on a two-run double by classmate
Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.). The Eagles finished with 15 hits in the game.
Munson went 3-for-5 with one BRI. Picone and Walsh had identical lines, going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Leonardi also was 2-for-4 with a run.
Johnson finished the day pitching 7.2 innings giving up a run on four hits while walking two and striking out eight.
In game two, Arnold pitched a seven inning complete game shutout with six strikeouts and just three hits for the win.
The Eagles (7-11, 4-0 CACC) got on the board early and often in the first inning as a single from Munson drove in two runs – Picone and junior
Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) – to make it a 2-0 game. Missiti would follow with an RBI double to left center. The inning was then capped by an RBI double by senior
Drew Deangelis (Robbinsville, N.J.) to make it a 4-0 game after the top of the first.
Post tacked on a run with a sac fly from Walsh that scored Wright. The final two runs came in the sixth inning as Munson and Missiti hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 7-0.
Munson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Missiti was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Wright scored three runs.
