Men’s Lacrosse Takes Down LIU Post 11-10

Trost makes program-record 27 saves in victory

WATERBURY, Conn. – Senior goalkeeper Shane Trost (Rochester, N.Y.) of the Post University men's lacrosse team made a program-record 27 saves to help lead the Eagles over LIU Post 11-10 at LaMoy Field on Wednesday afternoon. It marks the Eagles first-ever win over the perennial national power.

Post kicked off the scoring as senior Alsharif Blackman (Easton, Pa.) grabbed a ground ball and found senior Trevor Buchas (Bristol, Conn.) for an early goal. Senior Luke McDermott (New Milford, Conn.) made the score 2-0 with a wrap-around goal.

LIU cut the deficit to one before junior Kyle Hewlett (Bridgeport, Conn.) put the Eagles in front 3-1 late in the first with a tally after a turnover by the Pioneers' goalkeeper.

Seniors Mitchell Kinney (Hemlock, N.Y.) and Raymond Maeang (Newburgh, N.Y.) extended the Post advantage to 5-1 in the second. LIU answered but a penalty led to a man-up score by McDermott. The teams traded goals the rest of the half and a late score by Buchas forced a goaltender change by the Pioneers, as the Eagles led 7-5 at halftime.

Blackman score two quick goals to start the second half and keep the pressure on the Pioneers. LIU made the game 9-6 at the 11:03 mark of the third, but the Eagles had answer for every tally and brought an 11-8 lead into the fourth.

Both defenses stepped up in the fourth, including Trost who made six early saves before the Pioneers trimmed the deficit to 11-9 with 5:22 to play. A late turnover by the Eagles led to an LIU goal with 0.4 seconds remaining.

Post was outshot 47-27 on the day and 37-21 on goal. Senior Jack Kearney (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Trost each had five ground balls to lead the Eagles. Freshman Wilson Gurney (Victoria, British Columbia) recorded three caused turnovers. Trost's 27 saves are the third-most in a single game in Division II this season.

The Eagles are back at LaMoy Field on Saturday for Senior Day against #16 Southern New Hampshire. Face-off is set for 4 p.m.
