NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Post University softball team split at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom on Saturday at Asbury Field on the campus of Wilmington University. The Eagles dropped a 2-0 pitcher's duel in game one and bounced back for an 11-1 victory in the second game.
Game One: Goldey-Beacom 2, Post 0
Offense was hard to come by for both teams in the opener. Freshman
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) was the first baserunner for either side as she drew a walk to lead off the third. The Lightning had two hits in the bottom of the inning, but the game remained scoreless through three.
Junior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) singled to left to put a runner in scoring position for Post in the fourth, but the Eagles were unable to push home a run. Post had another chance in the fifth as Rivera singled and advanced to second on sacrifice with just one out. The next two Eagles struck out to end the threat.
An error by Post with two outs in the bottom of the fifth led to a two-run single by Ryann Farley as Goldey-Beacom took the lead for good. Post put two runners on in the sixth but were unable to score. The Eagles went down in order in the seventh.
Sophomore
Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) pitched well as she struck out two and allowed two unearned runs in a complete game.
Game Two: Post 11, Goldey-Beacom 1
Senior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) went 4-for-4 with four doubles and seven RBI to lead the Eagles to victory. She put Post in front 2-0 in the first as she drove in the first run and came home on an error by the Lightning.
Senior
Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) hit a one-single up the middle in the second. Rivera followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Kresley smacked another double to right to extend the lead to 4-0.
A sacrifice fly by Kresley brought home Lennox in the fourth as the Eagles pulled ahead 5-0. Goldey-Beacom scored its only run in the fifth inning, but another RBI double by Kresley got the run back for Post in the sixth.
Ahead 6-1 heading into the seventh, the Eagles left no doubt scoring five runs in the inning. Senior
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) led off the frame with a two-bagger and freshman
Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) followed and reached on an error. Runs scored on a groundout and flyout by the Eagles as the lead grew to 8-1.
Another run scored as the Lightning misplayed a single by Rivera with two outs. Kresley capped off her career game with another two-base knock that drove in the Eagles final runs.
Freshman
Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) struck out a season-high six batters and allowed just five hits, all singles, to pick up her third win of the year.
This marks the second seven RBI game for an Eagle this year as Ragazzone achieved the feat in a 7-6 win over Pace on March 14.
Post is back in action tomorrow in another CACC doubleheader against Chestnut Hill. First pitch in Philadelphia is set for 12 p.m.
