Softball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader at New Haven

Owens has two hits on the day

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Post University softball team could not get its offense going on Thursday afternoon as it was swept by New Haven in a non-conference road doubleheader. The Eagles dropped an eight-inning game 1-0 to open the day and fell 7-1 in the finale.

Game One: New Haven 1, Post 0, F/8
The Eagles managed just one hit and three baserunners in the first game of the day. Freshman Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) and the Post defense kept the Chargers off the board until a two-out double by Tori Schiebe in the eighth inning drove home the lone run.

Senior Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) got the only hit of the day as she crushed a double to right center in the third inning. New Haven advanced a runner to third in the sixth, the first for either team in the game, but a groundout ended the frame.

Post looked to get on the board in the seventh as senior Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) drew a lead-off walk. She advanced to third after a passed ball and ground out, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning trying to score on a fly out to right. After a leadoff single, Koref shut the Chargers down in order to send the game to extras.

Junior Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice in the eighth after senior Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Schaffer was able to get into scoring position at second but was stranded. Two doubles by New Haven in the bottom of the frame brought home the winning run.

Game Two: New Haven 7, Post 1
New Haven started quickly in game two and the Eagles could never bounce back as Taylor Luzzi hit a three-run homer in the first.

Owens smacked a double down the left field line to start the fourth. She finished with two hits in the finale. Senior Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) put runners at the corners with just one out with a single to left. The Eagles were unable to cut into the lead though as the next two batter went down in order.

The Chargers tacked on four more runs in the fifth on back-to-back two-run hits after loading the bases. Freshman Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) found herself on second after a single and an error to lead-off the sixth. Owens followed with an infield hit to put two on with nobody. Senior Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) drove home Devorin on a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-1. The next two Eagles reached on errors before a popup shut down the rally.

Post continues Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Saturday against Goldey-Beacom. First pitch in Wilmington, Del. is set for 1 p.m.
