Deren Scores Six Goals, Eagles Fall at Nyack 17-12

Post scores season-high 12 goals in CACC loss

NYACK, N.Y. – The Post University women's lacrosse team fell to Nyack 17-12 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road game Wednesday afternoon. Junior Toni Deren (Greenlawn, N.Y.) scored six goals while freshman Leona Stevens (Kingston, Mass.) added a career-best five goals.
 
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game on goals by Deren and Stevens. Nyack answered with four straight to pull ahead 4-2 with 15:06 to go in the first. Senior Tyra Jones (Rochester, N.Y.) won the ensuing draw; she finished with a game-high six draw controls. Deren quickly scored her second of the day on a free-position to trim the deficit to 4-3.
 
Nyack once against put a run together to grab control as it led 9-3. Stevens scored three more times for Post in the half, two on free-positions, and the Eagles trailed 11-6 at the intermission.
 
The Warriors had an answer every time Post tried to cut into the lead in the second half and were ahead 14-10 midway through. Deren scored her final goal of the game after a turnover by Nyack with just under 20 minutes remaining and a score by Stevens made it 14-12 with 15:28 left. The Eagles nearly cut the deficit to one, but Deren's free-position shot was saved. Nyack scored three more time to put the game away.
 
Senior captain Nicole Evans (Cortland, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist to go with two ground balls and two draw controls. Freshman Alana Lopez (Wolcott, Conn.) made a season-high 18 saves on the afternoon. Jones and senior Brina Yanez (West Haven, Conn.) had five ground balls each.
 
Post is on the road against Saturday, April 1 against Philadelphia in a CACC contest. Opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
