Saturday Sweep for Post Softball Over Georgian Court

Grzywna drives in career-high five runs in game two

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team swept Georgian Court in a Saturday afternoon Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at LaMoy Field. The Eagles defeated the Lions 9-5 in game one of the series. With the weather deteriorating, Post completed the sweep with a dominating 12-3 win in five innings in the second game. The Eagles batted over .500 generating 12 runs on a season-high 16 hits in game two.

Game 1- Post 9, Georgian Court 5
Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Post scored its first run of the day after the Lions issued a bases loaded walk; this was the third walk of the inning given up by the Lions. In the top of the fifth, Georgian Court extended the lead to 4-1 with an RBI double.

In the bottom of the fifth, a pitching change spelled trouble for the Lions. The new hurler came in and walked the first batter she saw. Senior Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa) came up next and ripped a frozen rope to the opposite field for a triple, scoring two runs. Junior Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) drove in Kresley with a sacrifice fly, tying the game 4-4.

After giving up a run in the top of the sixth, Post was looking to have a big inning in the bottom half. The Eagles came out and got runners into scoring position after the Lions gave up a walk and a single. Post tied the game again after senior Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) singled for a bunt and scored a run on a Georgian Court throwing error. With the bases loaded, Schaffer grounded out into a fielder's choice play allowing the winning run to cross the plate. Senior Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) came up and crushed a decisive three-run bomb giving the Eagles a 9-5 lead.

Freshman Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) pitched a 1-2-3 inning sealing the victory for Post in the top of the seventh. Ragazzone went 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a homer. She now leads the conference with 18 RBI this year.

Game 2- Post 12, Georgian Court 3, F/5
After falling behind 3-0 after an inning, the Eagles scored four runs in each inning after to mercy the Lions 12-3. With the bases loaded in the second, senior Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled to center scoring two runs and advancing a runner to second base. An Owens opposite field single scored two two more, giving Post a 4-3 lead.

Freshman Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) and senior Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) singled in the bottom of the third putting runners into scoring position. A wild pitch from the Georgian Court pitcher allowed a run to score from the third and advanced runners to second base and third base.
Grzywna came up next and cashed in for another RBI with an infield single. On the ensuing play, she stole second on a strikeout allowing Cammarano to score from third, making the score 8-3 Eagles.

Swinging a hot bat, Grzywna doubled to left-center in the inning scoring two runs. She drove in a career-high five runs in the game. Kresley also singled to center in the inning earning her third RBI of the day.

Freshman Brianna Rotunno (Staten Island, N.Y.) struck out five over five innings to earn her first-career victory.

The Eagles return to action on March 27 at 2 p.m. when they will host Queens College for non-conference doubleheader at LaMoy Field.
