Late Inning Magic Leads Eagles to Sweep of Bridgeport, Garofalo Wins 200th Career Game

Devorin smacks walk-off single in game two

WATERBURY, Conn. – Post University head softball coach Tracey Garofalo won the 200th game of her career on Tuesday as the Eagles swept Bridgeport at LaMoy Field. Post took game one 3-2 and game two 4-3 in eight innings.

Game One – Post 3, Bridgeport 2
Offense was hard to come by in game one as neither team could muster a hit over the first two innings. Bridgeport struck first in the top of the third as the first three batters reached on singles. Freshman Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) saved a run as she gunned Allison Luzzi down at the plate on a throw from centerfield. Meghan O'Leary grounded out next as the first run came home.

Sophomore Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) roped a single to center with one out in the third and advanced to second as junior Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) reached on an error by the Purple Knights' first baseman.

Senior Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) brought home the tying run on a base hit to left that got away from the fielder as she and Schaffer moved into scoring position. Senior Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) followed with an RBI single to left as the Eagles jumped in front 2-1 after three innings.

Bridgeport threatened in the fifth as Gabryelle Dubois reached on a fielder's choice and stole second and third with two outs. A groundout ended the inning and kept Post in front. The Purple Knights scored the tying run in the top of the sixth on a squeeze play that was mishandled by Kresley. The senior recovered to throw the batter out a second to end the inning.

Kresley made up for her error in the top of the inning with a blast to center field that proved to be the winning run. Denis struck out two as she picked up her second win of the year.

Game Two – Post 4, Bridgeport 3, F/8
Owens led off the sixth inning with an infield single as the Eagles trailed 3-0. A walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases with no outs. Senior Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) smacked her secondd hit of the game to left as Post trimmed the lead to 3-1. After a fielder's choice out a home, the bases still remained loaded for senior Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) and she delivered an RBI single up the middle. Freshman Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) drew a four-pitch walk to bring home the tying run.

Another out at home and a pop up ended the inning for Post. Each team had a runner advance to second in the seventh, but neither could push across the winning run.
Bridgeport sacrificed to begin the eighth inning and move it's placed runner to third, but a groundout to the pitcher and a flyout ended frame.

The Eagles looked to sacrifice to start the eight also, but the Purple Knights' tried to catch the runner a third and were unable to leave Post with runners at the corners and nobody out. Rivera once again drew a clutch walk to load the bases. Devorin crushed a line drive over the head of the Bridgeport centerfielder to give Post the 4-3 victory.

Dawson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in game two. Schaffer threw 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and one walk to pick up her first win of the year. Freshman Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) pitch well over the first 5.2 innings as she struck out two and scattered five hits.

Post returns to action tomorrow for a single game against Northeast-10 foe American International. First pitch at LaMoy Field is set for 2:30 p.m.
