WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team fell in both games of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) home opener against #22 Caldwell on Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field. Post battled back with four runs in the seventh but fell in game one 11-9. Caldwell took game two 14-2 in five innings.
In game one of the series, Caldwell looked to put the game away in the seventh with a six-run inning to jump ahead 11-5. With the Eagles down to their final out, junior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) kept the game alive with an infield singles and advanced to second on a walk by senior
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.). Senior
Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) blasted her first home run of the year to left to cut the lead to 11-8.
Freshman
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) kept the inning alive as she was hit by a pitch. Senior
Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) came up huge for Post as she crushed a double to left center, scoring Rivera and forcing a pitching change by the Cougars.
Senior
Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) continued to comeback with a base hit to right as the winning run came to the plate for Post. Freshman
Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) flew out to deep right to end the threat.
Caldwell took an early lead in the top of the second after Kiahna Silva singled to right center driving home one run. Schaffer responded in the bottom of the second with a homer to dead centerfield. After the bomb, a rattled Sydney Ponto walked Ragazzone, who later came home on a throwing error. Grzywna tacked on another with an RBI double to center as the Eagles led 3-1.
Post entered the bottom of the sixth down 5-3. Ragazzone singled to left to lead off the inning, sparking an Eagles comeback. Junior
Amanda Ely (Pittsfield, Mass.) came in to pinch run and scored on a base hit by freshman shortstop
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.). Grzywna followed and ripped a game-tying double down the left field line. She had a career game going 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI.
The Eagles came out flat in game two and trailed 14-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Senior infielder
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) hit a two-run homer to deep center to break up the shutout, her first long ball of the year.
The Eagles return to LaMoy Field on Thursday against in-state rival Bridgeport. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
