CLERMONT, Fla. – The Post University softball team fell in both games of its final doubleheader in Clermont, Fla. on Wednesday. The Eagles were defeated by Millersville 9-8 to start the day and St. Thomas Aquinas 3-2 in game two. Freshman
Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) was once again impressive going 4-for-8 on the day, including knocking out her first collegiate home run.
Millersville 9, Post 8
The game began with two early walks in the top of the first putting Millersville in scoring position. Meg McCurdy singled to left driving in the game's first run. In the bottom of the first, Post junior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) reached base on a walk. Schaffer was driven home on a double by senior
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) that knotted the game 1-1 after an inning.
After allowing one run in the top of the second, Post put up a four-run inning in the bottom half sparked by a two-run single by senior
Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.). A wild pitch and error by the Millersville pitcher yielded the other two runs as Post extended its lead to 5-2. The Marauders earned one back in the top of the third.
Post added three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore
Kailyn Biello (Watertown, Conn.) singled to center to start the frame. Devorin singled to left advancing Biello to second. Freshman
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) followed with an RBI single. Rivera and Devorin scored after a Millersville error at first base as Post opened an 8-3 lead.
The turning point of the game was in the top of the sixth inning when Millersville's Rebecca Blatt hit a two-run homer cutting the deficit to 8-7. After another Post call to the bullpen, Ally Kerr doubled to right field scored two runs giving Millersville the 9-8 lead.
Rivera led the team with two hits while Lennox added two RBI.
St. Thomas Aquinas 3, Post 2
The second game of the day was scoreless after two innings of play. In the top of the third, Devorin singled to right and advanced into scoring position after senior
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) reached base on an infield single. Ragazzone drove in Devorin for the game's first run, her ninth RBI in the last two days.
In the bottom of the third, St. Thomas Aquinas got the run back after an Alyssa Chelak single and Post error allowed Chelak to score on a fielder's choice.
Devorin had a memorable top five as a she launched her first career home-run putting Post up 2-1. In the bottom of the fifth the Spartans tied the game.
The top of the sixth looked promising for the Eagles. Rivera drew a one-out walk and advanced into scoring position on a single by sophomore
Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.). Lennox crushed a single to left, but Rivera was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
St. Thomas Aquinas began the bottom half of the sixth with an infield single. An error and sacrifice moved Melissa Sadler to third. She came home on a fielder's choice for the winning run. Post was unable to generate any offense and come back in the seventh.
Devorin led the team with three hits. Schaffer, Rivera, and Lennox added two hits each. Denis struck out three and allowed two earned runs in six innings in the circle.
The Eagles travel back home to snowy Waterbury, Conn. for doubleheader against #22 Caldwell on Tuesday at LaMoy Field. First game starts at 1 p.m.
