WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team split its final two matches of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center. The Eagles defeated Concordia 3-0 to open the day, but fell to NYIT 3-1 in the late match.
Post 3, Concordia 0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-11)
With the score tied 13-13, a block by freshman
Ashley Levatino (Holtsville, N.Y.) and junior
Brianna Root (Bristol, Conn.) sparked a 5-0 run to put the Eagles in front for good. Concordia would cut the deficit to three points before a kill by sophomore
Shannon Veale (Toms River, N.J.) ended the set 25-20.
Junior
Madison Hunziker had two kills, two aces, and a block as Post built an 18-8 lead in the second set. The Clippers scored the next six points to pull within four before the Eagles closed the set out on a 7-1, grabbing the 25-15 win.
Post had four of its nine total aces in the third set as the Eagles rolled to a 25-11 victory.
Hunziker recorded 11 kills, seven total blocks, and four aces to lead the Eagles. Veale added seven kills and four blocks. Senior
Sarah Ryder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) led the way with seven digs. Root had 26 assists.
NYIT 3, Post 0 (13-25, 22-25, 25-22, 17-25)
NYIT jumped out to a 12-4 lead to start the first set. The Eagles cut the deficit to five points at 13-8, but were unable to pull any closer as the Bears grabbed the set 25-13.
The teams traded runs during the second set as NYIT pulled ahead 12-5 early before two aces by Veale led the Eagles to five straight point to make the score 12-10. The Bears extended their lead back to eight points, but the Eagles cut it to two at 20-18. A block by Levatino and Hunziker cut the deficit to one late, but NYIT took the set 25-22.
Down two in the third set, the Eagles scored four straight to jump in front 22-20. Veale had one of her career best four aces to help Post take the lead. Senior
Kerrin Kallmann (Lake Grove, N.Y.) had two kills as the Eagles forced a fourth set with a 25-22 victory.
Post led 5-4 early in the fourth, but a 10-3 run by the Bears put them in front 15-7 and the Eagles were unable to recover.
Veale finished the match with 11 kills, 10 digs, and two blocks. Hunziker added 10 kills and 14 digs. Root put up 27 assists and a team high 16 digs.
The Eagles will open the CACC Tournament on Tuesday night at the Drubner Center against third-seeded Georgian Court. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
