Women’s Hockey Falls to St. Michael’s 4-2 in Season Opener

DiSciscio and Miller score for the Eagles

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Post University women's ice hockey team was defeated by St. Michael's 4-2 in its season-opener on Friday night at Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vt. Freshmen Ann Margaret DiSciscio (Litchfield, N.H.) and Kayleigh Miller (Braselton, Ga.) each scored for the Eagles.

The first period got off to a tough start as goals by Megan Doherty and Katherine O'Brien gave the Purple Knights 2-0 lead 5:41 into the game.

Off the opening faceoff of the second period, sophomore Kendall Fitzgerald (Kamloops, British Columbia) found DiSciscio on a pass from the neutral zone. The freshman shot from the left circle and beat the goaltender for her first-career goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.

St. Michael's scored just over a minute later to extend its lead to 3-1. The Eagles were able to kill off three power plays in the second period and converted on one of their own late in the frame. Miller scored from the left circle off a defender at the 17:57 mark to make the score 3-2 at the intermission.

A power play goal by Kaitlyn Wurzer from the blue line midway through the third was the final tally.

Post was outshot 38-24 on the night, but won a game-high 27 face offs. Sophomore Julia Schatz (East Haven, Conn.) won 13 face offs and classmate Molly Brumfield (Columbus, Ohio) was 8-2 in the circle. Sophomore goaltender Jenna Baumgartner (Roseau, Minn.) made 35 saves in net.

The Eagles and Purple Knights will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
