WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team saw its 20-match home Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win streak come to a halt on Saturday with a 3-2 loss to Jefferson. Junior
Madison Hunziker (Sacramento, Calif.) had a season-best 25 kills in the loss.
The Eagles took the first set 25-20. Ahead 17-16, Post staged a 7-0 run to get within a point of victory. Hunziker had four kills and a block during the stretch. The Rams answered with four straight points before another kill by Hunziker gave the Eagles the set.
The second set was close throughout with neither team leading by more than three the entire way. Down 19-16, Post was able to come back and tie the set 23-23 after a block by sophomores
Ann Marie Nelson (Draper, Utah) and
Shannon Veale (Toms River, N.J.). Unfortunately, Jefferson scored the final two point to tie the match 1-1.
Post fell behind 10-9 in the third set, but another 7-0 run gave the Eagles control with a 16-10 lead. Nelson sparked the run with two kills and two blocks. Jefferson answered with a 9-2 spurt to jump ahead 19-18. The Eagles allowed just two points the rest of the way to take the set 25-21.
A kill by Hunziker made the score 14-12 in favor of the Eagles in the fourth set. The Rams defense stayed strong, with four blocks as Jefferson scored 13 of the final 16 points to send the match to a deciding fifth set.
Jefferson continued to roll in the final set, jumping out to a 10-3 advantage. The Eagles closed the gap to three at 14-11, but it was too late.
Junior
Sarah Seger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 14 kills, 10 digs, two aces and a block. Senior
Sarah Ryder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) added a team-best 14 digs. Freshman
Ashley Levatino (Holtsville, N.Y.) had nine kills and a block. Junior
Brianna Root (Bristol, Conn.) had 44 assists, two kills, and four digs.
Post returns to action on Tuesday night on the road at Nyack. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
