WATERBURY, Conn. – As time expired at the Drubner Center on Tuesday night, junior
Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc to lift the Post University men's basketball team over Nyack 77-74. Mareno finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds as the Eagles improved to 8-11 overall and 7-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play.
The Eagles found themselves ahead 74-68 with 17 seconds remaining in the game after two free throws by senior
Malcolm Amos (Brookport, Ill.). Nyack trimmed the lead to 74-71 with a three-pointer with six seconds left. On the inbounds, Amos was tied up and the Warriors stole the ball and called a timeout.
Out of the break Shawn Witherspoon hit an open three in front of his bench to tie the game with 1.2 seconds left. The Eagles called a timeout to setup the final play. Amos heaved the ball to Mareno, who caught it, turned around, and hit the buzzer-beater to give snap the Eagles three-game losing skid.
Post led throughout most of the game and as many as six points in the first half. Nyack trimmed away and took its first lead a 22-21 with 8:35 remaining in the first. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half the Warriors held a slim 36-35 advantage at halftime.
The second half was much of the same. With the score tied 64-64 with 3:28 left, the Eagles scored five straight points and looked to have the game at hand with under a minute left before the final sequence.
Amos was 8-for-8 from the free throw line and scored 17 points. Junior
Naasir Williams (Harlem, N.Y.) added 11 points and three assists. Post held a 45-33 advantage on the glass.
Post returns to action on Saturday afternoon at home against Holy Family. Tip off at Drubner is set for 3 p.m.
