Post Drops Game One of Weekend Series at Fredonia

Defensive Mishaps in the Second Period Cause Trouble for Eagles

FREDONIA, NY-  The Post University men's ice hockey team began its weekend series against SUNY Fredonia on Friday night with a 14-0 loss. The teams will be back in action again on Saturday.

The game began with a solid defensive effort by Post. Fredonia was not able to initially generate any chances against an injury-riddled Post lineup. However, a Fredonia goal scored by forward Gavin Nickerson at 10:08 of the first period sparked the Blue Devils offense. Fredonia tallied two more goals before the end of the first period.

The second period spelled trouble for Post. Playing with a 3-0 lead, Fredonia began to buzz on the ice and played most of the second period in the offensive zone. Fredonia ended up having a ten goal period. Fredonia would tack on another goal in the third period, handing Post a 14-0 loss. After the game, Post head coach Peter Whitney remarked that "A flat second period set us back and we were unable to get back on track."

Post ended the game with a total of seven shots on goal. Three of those shots were courtesy of freshman forward Tyler Hackett (Branford, Conn.). Freshman goaltender Devin Day (Fontana, Calif.) made some spectacular saves in the first period, totaling 31 saves at the end of first and 45 on the evening. Combined, Post forwards and defenseman managed to block 11 shots during the game.

The Eagles return to action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. on Fredonia's 11th annual "Pink the Rink Night" raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Pregame festivities begin at 7 pm at Steele Hall Ice Arena.
