WATERBURY, Conn. – A catch-and-release layup by Flo Da-Silva off a baseline inbound pass with 0.3 seconds remaining gave USciences a 71-69 victory over the Post University men's basketball team at the Drubner Center on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fall to 7-10 on year and 6-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play.
Down 67-61 late in the second half, junior
Tyler Desrosiers (Agawam, Mass.) scored five straight points on a three and a baseline layup as the Eagles pulled within one with 1:36 remaining. On the other end with the shot clock running down Beni Toure sunk a put-back to extend the Devils' lead back to three points with 33 seconds left and the Eagles called a timeout.
Out of the break, senior
Malcolm Amos (Brookport, Ill.) nailed deep three with 23 ticks left to tie the game 69-69. Da-Silva looked to take the final shot with time winding down, but the Eagles knocked the ball away as it went out of play with under a second left to setup the final play.
The first half was fast paced as both teams starting the game shooting well from the floor. Post hit eight of its first 10 shots to jump out to an early 19-14 lead. Desrosiers was 4-of-5 to start the game and scored 10 of his game-high 19 points by the 13:42 mark.
Sophomore
Adnan Halilovich (Mali Svornik, Serbia) hit a layup midway through the half to give Post its largest lead of the afternoon at 27-18. USciences used a 12-2 spurt from there to pull in front by one. The Eagles grabbed the lead back on their next possession and were in front until a late Devils basket knotted the score 38-38 at halftime.
USciences led by as many as eight in the second half before the Eagles were able to climb back into the game late.
Amos hit four three-pointers to finish with 16 points and four assists. Junior
Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) pulled down eight rebounds to go with five points and two steals.
This marks the second time this season Post has dropped a CACC game at home on a last-second shot. Felician defeated the Eagles 68-65 on Nov. 30 on a half-court buzzer beater.
Post is back in action on Monday night as the Eagles visit Caldwell. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
