Waterbury, Conn. – Senior
Sylvia Yanez (West Haven, Conn.) had a hat trick and sophomore
Ariana Hoxha (Watertown, Conn.) added two goals, as the Post University women's soccer team lit up the scoreboard in a 7-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game over Nyack on Wednesday afternoon at LaMoy Field.
With the win, the Eagles are now .500 overall on the season at 2-2. They are undefeated in CACC play at 2-0.
After many close calls to start the game, the Eagles finally got on the board in the 29
th minute as Yanez stole the ball from Nyack goalkeeper, Julianna Kranes 30 yards out and shot the ball into the open net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. In the 41
st minute, Yanez would take a great lead pass from junior
Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany) and stick it past Kranes to make it a 2-0 game.
Before anyone could blink, the Eagles added another goal in the same minute as Hoxha got the ball in the middle of the penalty area and put a point blank shot past the keeper for a 3-0 lead.
Nyack would make it a 3-1 game on a goal by Jessica Short in the 42
nd minute, just before the half.
The scoring wouldn't end there, as Mertz would add a goal of her own on a free kick just outside the penalty box that avoided the Nyack wall in the 68
th minute, making it a 4-1 Eagles lead.
Yanez would save her most impressive goal for her last as she made a great dribble move on the left side of the net to get by a defender before sneaking the ball past Kranes on the lower left side, just inside the post to make it a 5-1 game in the 75
th minute.
Freshman
Fitore Kllobocishta (Albania) would get her first career goal as an Eagle, in the 76
th minute, taking a pass from Samantha Rodriguez to give the Eagles a 6-1 lead.
Hoxha would then put the icing on the cake in the 78
th minute, taking a cross from
Bryanna D'Arcangelo (Bridgeport, Conn.) with the goalie out of position and putting it into the open net.
The seven goals for the Eagles were the most for the team since in 8-2 win over Bloomfield in 2014.
Post outshot the Warriors, 17-10. Sophomore goalkeeper
Cailah Baranowski (Naugatuck, Conn.) finished the game with two saves.
Coach
Matt Micros said it was the first game all season the team had 12 healthy players.
"Anytime you can start 2-0 in conference play against teams you are competing with for a playoff spot, you're happy. Hopefully, we can get healthy and continue to improve," Micros said.
Up next for the Eagles is a CACC road contest at Concordia on September 20 at 4 p.m.
