Freshmen Help Catapult Eagles To 3-2 Comeback Win Over Chestnut Hill

Yanez Scores Game-WInner

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Post University women's soccer team came back from a two goal deficit to defeat the Chestnut Hill Griffins, 3-2 in its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Eagles move to 1-2 overall, and most importantly, 1-0 in CACC play.

The Eagles fell behind fairly early in the first half as Brianna Ferrell of Chestnut hill scored off of a cross from Cecilia DuMond to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

After Kylee Jazikoff gave the Griffins a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute, redshirt freshman Hope Wilson (Mahopac, N.Y.) made it a one goal deficit on a pass from junior Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany) after Mertz fed Wilson a pass to create a one-on-one opportunity for the goal.

Chestnut Hill would go into the half up 2-1, but it didn't take long for the Eagles to tie the game as freshman Erika Signorile (Sayreville, N.J.) took a rebound off the foot of senior Sylvia Yanez (West Haven, Conn.) to tie the game, 2-2.

The teams would go scoreless the rest of the half, however, in overtime, Yanez would deliver a strike on a breakaway from the center pitch to give the Eagles the 3-2 win for their first victory of the season.

"Sylvia battled food poisoning and came off the bench in OT after throwing up to win the game," coach Matt Micros said.

Post outshot Chestnut Hill, 15-12 and redshirt sophomore Cailah Baranowski (Naugatuck, Conn.) finished with seven saves to follow up from her nine save performance earlier in the week.

Coach Micros was very happy with the performance.

"The girls showed a ton of character and heart today. Coming back from 2-0 down in 95 degree heat with 12-13 healthy players was incredible. The freshmen have tremendous upside and our upperclassmen are great leaders," Micros said.

Up next for the Eagles is their first CACC home game as they take on Nyack on September 14 at 4 p.m. at LaMoy Field.
