BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Post University softball team split its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Concordia on Thursday afternoon. A late rally fell short in game one as the Eagles fell 2-1. Post scored three runs in the seventh to capture a 6-3 victory in game two.
The Eagles sit in fourth place in the CACC at 16-6 with four games remaining.
Game One – Concordia 2, Post 1
A controversial call waved off the tying run for the Eagles in the top of the seventh inning. Senior
Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) legged out an infield single to open the frame and came home on a double by sophomore
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.).
Sophomore
Aja DeGrauw (Shirley, N.Y.) pinch ran for Schaffer. With two outs, freshman
Marissa Wilson (Holbrook, N.Y.) singled to right as DeGrauw scored. Concordia appealed the run on the grounds that the runner missed third. The Clippers won the appeal to force the third out of the inning and end the game.
The Eagles loaded the bases with just one out in the second inning but were unable to break the scoreless tie. Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame as a run scored on an error. Post put two on in the third and were once again stranded and the Clippers added another run to their lead in the bottom.
Junior
Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) was 3-for-3 in the game. Schaffer had two hits and an RBI. Senior
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) pitched effectively with seven strikeouts and five hits over six innings.
Game Two – Post 6, Concordia 3
Wilson put the game out of reach with a two-run pinch-hit blast to center in the seventh. The Eagles took the lead earlier in the inning as Cammarano drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Junior
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) began the seventh with a single up the middle. Esque attempted a sac bunt and reached on an error. Junior
Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) moved both into scoring position with a bunt for the first out of the inning.
Concordia grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning with back-to-back two-out hits. Freshman
Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) smacked a double to lead off the fourth and went to third on a passed ball. Dawson followed with an infield single and also advanced on a passed ball. A sac fly by Cammarano brought in the first run.
Hits by sophomore
Korie McDonald (Middleboro, Mass.) and junior
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) loaded the bases with one out. Senior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) drew a nine-pitch walk to bring home the tying run. Kresley put Post in front 3-2 with a base hit in the sixth inning. Concordia tied the game in the bottom of the inning before the Eagles three-run seventh.
Denis pitched the first four innings and struck out four batters. Esque earned the win with two hits and five punch outs over the final three frames.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow afternoon at Holy Family. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 1 p.m.
