Danbury, Conn. – Sophomore
Enzo Esposito (Hamilton, N.J.) struck out 12 batters in game one and freshman Mike Munson (Plainville, Conn.) homered in both games as the Post University baseball team split a doubleheader with Caldwell at Rogers Park in a Central Atlantic Collegiate tilt. Post won the first game, 7-5 while Caldwell won game two, 10-8.
Esposito (2-4) was stellar from the get-go, striking out the side in the first inning. He retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced, seven via strikeout. It was the fourth time this season Esposito struck out 11 or more batters, and the second time he has struck out 12 in a game this season. He finished the day giving up three earned runs on two hits and four walks in six innings.
The Eagles offense scored early as freshman
Shawn Boston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in junior
Drew Deangelis (Robbinsville, N.J.) with an RBI single after freshman
Andrew Avots (South Brunswick, N.J.) scored on a botched pickoff attempt by Caldwell starter Chris Gehrsitz.
Post tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the fifth by way of the long ball as Munson hit his third homer of the season after sophomore
Alex Wright led off the inning with a single. After a double from Avots and a walk from Deangelis, junior
Rupert House (Spokane, Wash.) drove a pitch dead center over the 360 foot sign to give the Eagles the insurance they would need and put them up 7-0.
Caldwell rallied in the seventh inning, scoring five runs, thanks in large part to a grand slam from Ryan Rivera. It would be the only inning the Cougars would get runs as sophomores
Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) and
Ben Brown (Middlebury, Conn.) shut down the Cougars the final two innings.
In game two, Caldwell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second capped by an RBI single from William Levier.
Post quickly responded in the bottom half of the second as freshman Boston hit his first of two two-run doubles of the game as he drove in sophomore
Luke Leonardi (Holbrook, N.Y.) and House. Wright followed with an RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
Boston would hit is second two-run double two innings later as this time it scored Leonardi and Deangelis. Similar to the second inning, Wright followed with an RBI single to extend the Eagles lead to 6-2.
Caldwell would take advantage on errors by the Eagles scoring two runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and four more in the seventh to make it a 10-6 game.
Post rallied in the bottom of the ninth as Munson hit a solo homer with one out in the inning followed by back-to-back singles by Avots and Wright. After a pitching change, House singled to left field to drive in Avots. However, with runners on first and second with two outs, Christopher Cerg was able to get the last two batters out to end the game.
Starter Brett Pisanseschi (East Quogue, N.Y.) pitched five innings, giving up four runs – two earned – on five hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Boston finished the game going 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Leonardi was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Up next for the Eagles is a CACC doubleheader at Wilmington on April 23. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
