WATERBURY, Conn. – A fourth-quarter comeback by the Post University men's lacrosse team fell short as the Eagles were defeated by #14 Molloy 8-7 at LaMoy Field on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Frank Nichols Jr. (Oceanside, Calif.) and freshman Matthew Mazza (West Seneca, N.Y.) each scored twice in the game.
The Eagles scored the final two goals of the third quarter to tie the game 5-5 heading into the final period. Mazza cut the deficit to 5-4 with his second goal of the game with 7:42 left in the quarter. The teams alternated possessions following the goal and junior Jack Kearney (Sandy Hook, Conn.) forced a turnover to give the Eagles the ball.
Nichols Jr. knotted the game as he rocketed a goal past the Lions' keeper with 4:34 remaining in the third. Molloy grabbed the lead back early in the fourth after a turnover by Post and led 8-5 with 9:12 left in the game.
Post won the ensuing faceoff and Nichols Jr. quickly scored his second of the game. The Eagles forced another turnover on Molloy's next possession. Senior Colby Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.) found junior Luke McDermott (New Milford, Conn.) for a goal as Post cut the deficit to just one.
With just over a minute remaining, freshman Matthew Palmieri (Waldwick, N.J.) knocked the ball loose and the Eagles gained possession. Post was unable to get a shot off as it turned the ball back over with 24 seconds left.
The Eagles led 2-1 after the first quarter on goals by freshman Patrick Egan (Colchester, Conn.) and Mazza. Molloy answered back with two straight goals to take a 3-2 lead in the second, but Palmieri tied the game heading into halftime with his first score of the year.
Molloy outshot Post 44-33 overall and held a slim 22-21 advantage in shots on goal. The Eagles caused a season-high 11 turnovers, led by Palmieri with five. The freshman also picked up a team-high eight ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Rob Rohan (East Islip, N.Y.) made 14 saves between the pipes.
Post will play its final home game of the season on Saturday, April 9 against Georgian Court. Face-off is set for 3 p.m.
