Eagles Combine For Six Homers In Sweep Over Dominican

Walsh Breaks School Record

Naugatuck, Conn. – Sophomore Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) hit two home runs – including a grand slam - as the Post University baseball team used the long ball often in its doubleheader sweep of Dominican, 8-6 and 10-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tilt at Naugatuck High School.

Walsh now has nine home runs on the season, which is the new single season school record for home runs in the season, surpassing Josh Payne's record, who hit eight in both 2000 and 2001.

Dominican went up 3-0 in the third inning on home runs by Max Franzone and Jayson Gray and an RBI single from Jonel Ozuna,

After a single from junior Rupert House (Spokane, Wash.) and sophomore Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) and a walk from junior Joey Picone (Washingtonville, N.Y.), Walsh took an 0-2 pitch from Brett Schneider over the center field wall to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.

The Chargers tacked on a run in the fifth on another home run from Gray and scored two more in the sixth on a solo shot from Carlos Lopez and an RBI single from Leonardo Bravo to give Dominican a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Walsh led off the inning with a solo home run to make it a 6-5 game. The Eagles put runners on first and third base later in the inning but failed to score.

In the eighth, Post took advantage of shoddy pitching from the Chargers as Wright, Picone, and Walsh all walked consecutively to load the bases. After freshman Mike Munson (Plainville, Conn.) struck out, classmate Andrew Avots (South Brunswick, N.J.) ripped a ball down the first base line that was misplayed by Lopez allowing Wright and Picone to score. A poor throw from rightfielder William Seymour on the play allowed Walsh to score to give the Eagles an 8-6 lead.

Senior Alex Johnson (Bethel, Conn.) got the win in relief for the Eagles, giving up no hits and walking two while striking out two. Starter Nick Arnold through six innings and struck out four.
In game two, the Eagles got off to a slow start offensively after falling behind 2-0 early, but the bats came alive in the sixth and seventh innings for the blowout victory.

Munson would get the Eagles in the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run.

It would be the only hit the Eagles had until the sixth inning, when Wright and Picone hit back to back home runs to give Post (10-24, 5-9 CACC) a 3-2 lead. After a sacrifice fly from junior Drew Deangelis (Robbinsville, N.J.) gave the Eagles a 4-2 lead, House blasted the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to give the Eagles a 6-2 lead.

Post tacked on four more runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Munson and Avots and poor defense from the Chargers (12-22, 6-8 CACC) on a ball hit by Deangelis that allowed two runs to score.

Junior Joseph Enderle (Hicksville, N.Y.) was great on the mound, pitching 7.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits and a walk. He struck out five.

Up  next for the Eagles is an out-of-conference road game at AIC on April 19. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
