WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team used a season-high 27 hit performance to sweep Nyack in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at LaMoy Field on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles are now 20-17 overall and 13-4 in conference play. Post took game one 6-2 and won the second game 11-3 in five innings
Eight Eagles had multi-hit performances on the afternoon. Sophomore
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) had five hits, three RBI, and earned a victory in the circle. Freshman
Marissa Wilson (Holbrook, N.Y.) also had five hits and two RBI. Junior
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) smashed two home runs.
Game One – Post 6, Nyack 2
Schaffer got things started for the Eagles in the first inning with a single up the middle that drove in two. Two batters later Wilson put Post in front 3-0 with an RBI single to centerfield.
Nyack added a run in the third on a solo shot by Kim Yano. Ragazzone answered back with a solo home run of her own to lead off the third as the Eagles extended their lead to 4-1. Post drew three walks in the fourth to load the bases with two outs but were unable to increase the lead. The Warriors hit another solo homer in the fifth.
Wilson smacked her second RBI single of the day in the bottom of the fifth. She would come around to score on a base hit by junior
Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) to put the Eagles in front 6-2.
Senior
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) improved to 15-5 on the year as she threw a complete game and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out 10.
Game Two – Post 11, Nyack 3, F/5
Nyack grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Alissa Brugnoli reach on an error and scored on a passed ball. The first four Eagles had base hits to start the home half of the frame. Senior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) and Schaffer each drove in runs. Junior
Kathryn Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) lined a base-hit to right to bring home two more and Post led 4-1 after an inning.
Junior
Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) crushed a double over the head of the left fielder to drive in a run in the fourth. Classmate
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) followed with an RBI ground out that advanced two into scoring position. The Eagles opened a 7-1 advantage as Grzywna scored on a wild pitch.
The Warriors closed the gap to 7-3, but a four-run fifth by Post ended the game. Schaffer began the inning with a single and came home on a two-run blast by Ragazzone. Five of the next six Eagles lined base-hits up the middle to bring home the final runs.
Schaffer picked up her first victory of the year as she scatted seven hits over four innings and struck out one. Freshman
Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) threw an inning of relief and has one strikeout. Post had a season-high 17 hits in game two.
The Eagles return to LaMoy on Saturday afternoon against USciences. Post will be holding its annual "Think Pink" Breast Cancer Awareness Game as well as celebrating senior day. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
