Naugatuck, Conn. – Sophomore
Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) hit three home runs, including a grand slam and drove in 10 runs in the second game of a doubleheader sweep over University of the Sciences on Sunday afternoon at Naugatuck High School. Post won 5-2 and 16-11.
Walsh opened up the game two slugfest with a two-run shot to left field to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the first inning to right field that also plated junior
Joey Picone (Washingtonville, N.Y.). Walsh was just getting started as he drove in two more runs in the bottom of the third on a single that scored Picone once again.
Senior
Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) would tack on a single in the bottom of the third to score Walsh to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead after the third.
The Devils would storm back in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs with two outs, thanks to a few miscues in the field by the Eagles.
It didn't take the Eagles long to tie it as Picone's sacrifice fly in the fourth scored freshman
Shawn Boston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to tie the game once again.
USciences would get a run in the fifth on a homer by Mike Pollastrelli and another run on an RBI ground out by Pat Hiester in the 6
th to take an 8-6 lead.
After junior
Rupert House (Spokane, Wash.) and freshman
Andrew Avots (South Brunswick, N.J.) scored on an error off the bat of sophomore
Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.), Walsh would again go deep for his second homer of the game and more importantly giving the Eagles a 10-8 lead.
USciences would not go away as the Devils scored two more runs in the seventh on an RBI single by T.J. Dezzi and a fielder's choice by Adam Reed to tie the game, 10-10.
With the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, Picone drove in a run on a single, setting the stage for Walsh once again. Walsh blasted the ball over the left-center wall and was mobbed by his teammates at home plate as the Eagles took a 15-10 lead.
Each team would tack on one more run in the eighth inning for the final score.
Senior
Alex Johnson (Bethel, Conn.) earned the win in relief, striking out three in two innings.
In game one, Avots hit a two run homer and sophomore
Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts in the 5-2 win for the Eagles.
After USciences scored on an RBI single from Daniel Pineda in the second inning, Avots hit a home run to left-center that also scored freshman Mike Munson (Plainville, Conn.) to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. In the sixth, Walsh would double to score Wright to give Post the 3-1 lead.
Amicon would homer for USciences in the seventh to make it a 3-2 game, but an RBI double by Walsh and a run scoring passed ball gave the Eagles some insurance in the eighth inning.
