WATERBURY, Conn. – Sophomore
Sam Rodriguez (Wayne, N.J.) struck for seven goals but the Post University women's lacrosse team was defeated by Nyack 20-15 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game on Wednesday afternoon at LaMoy Field.
An illegal stick caused the Eagles to begin the game a player down, but Post was unaffected as sophomore
Toni Deren (Greenlawn, N.Y.) converted on a free-position shot to take a 1-0 lead in the first minute. Deren caused a turnover on the Warriors' next possession and Rodriguez quickly scored.
Nyack got on the board with 25:41 left in the first half, but the Eagles quickly answered with goals by Deren and Rodriguez to extend their lead to 4-1. The Warriors closed the gap to 4-3 before Rodriguez added another. Senior
Jasana Levy (Meriden, Conn.) scored her first-career goal midway through the half to put Post in front 6-3.
The Warriors answered with six straight goals as they grabbed a 10-6 lead. Deren added two more tallies to cut the deficit to one before Nyack scored late and led 11-9 at the half.
Rodriguez opened the second half with a free-position score to narrow the Warriors' lead. Sophomore
Savannah Schwack (Manorville, N.Y.) knotted the game 11-11 under a minute later. A turnover by Nyack led a goal by Deren as Post grabbed a 12-12 advantage with 21:55 left.
Nyack jumped back in front 14-13, but Rodriguez struck again to tie the game at 14-14 with 12:25 remaining. The Warriors took over from there as they outscored Post 6-1 down the stretch to pull away.
The seven goals scored by Rodriguez are the second-highest ever scored in a single game for Post.
The Eagles narrowly outshot 37-33 and we able to force Nyack to commit 30 turnovers. Post held a 35-27 advantage in ground balls, led by Rodriguez with eight. Junior
Tyra Jones (Rochester, N.Y.) had five ground balls and five caused turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper
Monica Kochurin (Manassas, Va.) made 13 saves and picked up six ground balls.
Post returns to action on Saturday afternoon at home against Philadelphia. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
