WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team was swept by #20 Southern New Hampshire in a non-conference doubleheader at LaMoy Field on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles took an 8-7 lead after falling behind 7-0 in game one before falling 17-11. Post was defeated 7-1 in the second game.
Game One – Southern New Hampshire 17, Post 11The Penmen looked like they were going to run away with a victory in game one. Southern New Hampshire scored three runs in the first and four in the second on three home runs to take a 7-0 lead after an inning and a half.
Junior
Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) led off the home half of the second with a single to center. Sophomore
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) walked and freshman
Marissa Wilson (Holbrook, N.Y.) followed with a single to load the bases with no outs. Junior Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) worked a six-pitch walk to bring home the first run as Post trailed 7-1.
After two runners were forced out at home, the Eagles rallied for seven runs with two outs. Junior
Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) reached on a fielder's choice, but the Penmen were unable to record an out as another run came across. Classmate
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) drew a walk to make the score 7-3.
The Eagles added two more as groundball by senior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) was misplayed by the third baseman. Ragazzone was hit by a pitch in her second at-bat of the inning to load the bases once again. Schaffer, Wilson, and Dawson each smashed base hits as Post stormed back to take an 8-7 lead after two innings.
Bats were quiet for both teams in the third. Southern New Hampshire grabbed the lead back with a three-run fourth. The Penmen launched two more home runs in the fifth to extend their advantage to 14-8.
Kresley hit an infield single and Ragazzone drew a walk with one out in the sixth. Schaffer crushed a three-run bomb left center, her of the season, to make the score 14-11. Southern New Hampshire added three more in the seventh.
Game Two – Southern New Hampshire 7, Post 1Southern New Hampshire scored early again in game two with three runs on three hits and an error in the first. Owens was walked to begin the third inning and stole second. Kresley slammed a double of the wall in right field to bring her home and cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Penman used another longball in the third as Mo Hannon smashed a two-run shot to center to make the score 5-1.
Post put a runner on in each of the next three innings but couldn't bring anyone around to close the gap. Southern New Hampshire added two in the sixth and led 7-1.
Owens lined an infield single back at the pitcher in the seventh. Senior
Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) gave the Eagles life with a two-out ground-rule double to right field, but both were stranded as a groundout ended the game.
The Eagles busy schedule continues tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Bridgeport. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
