Baseball Falls In CACC Opener To Chestnut Hill

Rodriguez smashes four hits on the day

NORRISTOWN, Pa. – The Post University baseball team drops its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener on Saturday afternoon against Chestnut Hill. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Municipal Stadium, but was played at Lackshaw-McCarthy Field in Norristown, Pa. with Post serving as the home team.

Game One: Chestnut Hill 3, Post 2
The first two batters of the second inning drew walks for Chestnut Hill. A sacrifice bunt by Bobby Slagle III moved both into scoring position and the Griffins pushed the first run across on a sacrifice fly to left field.

Senior Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) doubled to deep left center with one out in the bottom of the second. Freshman Andrew Avots (South Brunswick, N.J.) tied the game 1-1 on an RBI single to left field. Chestnut Hill loaded the bases in the third but junior Matt D'Ariano (Yonkers, N.Y.) forced a groundout to end the threat.

Avots reached on his second base hit to leadoff the fifth inning. Sophomore Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) singled up the middle to put runners at the corners with just one out. Wright stole second and Avots attempted to score on the throw but was gunned down at the plate.

Junior Joey Picone (Washingtonville, N.Y.) reached safely on an error by the shortstop to start the sixth. Sophomore Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) followed with double down the line in right. Picone came in to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Three singles and a walk by the Griffins in the eighth inning scored two runs as the visitors took a 3-2 lead. D'Ariano allowed one run on three hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked six.

Game Two: Chestnut Hill 4, Post 1
Post took an early lead in the game two. Rodriguez led the second inning off with a single to left field. Junior Rafael Tous (Flemington, N.J.) crushed a double over the head of the right fielder to put two in scoring position with no outs. After a strikeout, both runners advanced on a wild pitch and the Eagles led 1-0.

Chestnut Hill answered right back in the third. The leadoff man reached on an error and scored two batters later on a double down the line. Robert Stagle drove in the go-ahead run with a single to left field.

The Eagles threatened in the fifth as junior Drew Deangelis (Robbinsville, N.J.) singled to start the frame. He moved to third after a sac bunt and passed ball. Deangelis was thrown out at the plate as he tried to score on a ground ball by Wright.

Post would not have a base runner the rest of the game. The Griffins added a run in the seven and eighth innings.

Sophomore Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) threw seven strong innings as he allowed three runs (one earned) and struck out eight.

The Eagles return to action on Monday with a game at Merrimack. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
