WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind a record-tying seven goals from junior
Trevor Buchas (Bristol, Conn.) the Post University men's lacrosse team won its first game of the season 19-10 over District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon. First-year head coach
Derek Marks earns the first coaching win of his career.
Buchas put the Eagles ahead 2-0 to start the game. Junior
Luke McDermott (New Milford, Conn.) added his first of two goals on the day with 8:21 left in the first as Post extended its lead to 3-0. The Firebirds answered with a score late in the period, but Buchas added his third of the game with two second left as Post led 4-1 after one.
UDC struck first in the second quarter, but the Eagles rolled off five straight goals break open a 9-2 lead. Buchas started the run with his fourth of the day. Sophomore
Frank Nichols Jr. (Oceanside, Calif.) added a man-up goal off a pass from junior
Paul Hylan (Clinton, Conn.). Hylan also had two goals on the day.
Freshmen
Matthew Mazza (West Seneca, N.Y.) and
Patrick Egan (Colchester, Conn.) continued the onslaught before Buchas struck late in the quarter.
The Firebirds closed the deficit to five with two straight goals to start the third quarter, but would not get any closer as Post outscored UDC 10-6 the rest of the way.
Mazza scored four goals and added two assists. Senior
Colby Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.) added four assists and four groundballs. Freshman
Matthew Palmieri (Waldwick, N.J.) picked up six groundballs. Junior
Rob Rohan (East Islip, N.Y.) made 21 saves between the pipes.
Post was outshot 64-44 on the day and 31-27 on goal. The Eagles were 4-of-10 on extra-man opportunities.
The seven goals by Buchas ties Post's single-game record held by Alex Brownlee. Brownlee scored seven times against Alderson Broaddus in the Eagles' inaugural 2014 season. Buchas has 13 goals in two career games against UDC.
The Eagles home schedule opens on Wednesday afternoon against American International at LaMoy Field. Face-off is set for 2:30 p.m.
