Game Recap: Baseball |

Avots Leads Eagles To Split With Mansfield

Drops Game To LeMoyne on Saturday

Colonial Heights, Va. - Freshman Andrew Avots (South Brunswick, N.J.) went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored as the Post University baseball team took down Mansfield in the second game of a doubleheader, 10-6 to earn a split of the two games on Sunday afternoon. Mansfield won the first game, 10-0.

With the Eagles up 1-0 after the first inning, Avots double to drive home sophomore Luke Leonardi (Holbrook, N.Y.) to make it 2-0 in the top of the second. Junior Drew Deangelis (Robbinsville, N.J.) would follow with a two-run double of his own to open the floodgates for the Eagles to make it a 4-0 game. The Eagles would score one more run in the inning on an error.

Avots was just getting started as a double in the third inning scored junior Rafael Tous (Flemington, N.J.) to make it a 6-0 game before junior Joey Picone (Washingtonville, N.Y.) effectively put the game out of reach with a two run single that scored Deangelis and Avots to make it an 8-0 game.

Avots would tack on another RBI on a double in the fourth that would score Leonardi.

Zephan Kash led the Mansfield rally - that fell short - as he hit a two-run homer in the third inning, followed by an RBI double in the fourth inning. Taylor Hillson also tacked on a two-run double in the fourth.

Picone finished with three RBI for the Eagles. Deangelis finished the game going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Sophomore Enzo Esposito (Hamilton, N.J.) started and pitched 3.2 innings, striking out seven and giving up five earned runs on four walks and five hits. Freshman Tyler Kovalewich (Colonia, N.J.) earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief. He gave up one earned run and struck out three.

Game 1: Mansfield 10, Post 0
In Game one, Mansfield scored eight runs in the seventh inning and the Eagles were held to just one hit in a 10-0 loss.

Kash again was the offensive catalyst for Mansfield, going 3-for-3, with two runs scored - including two home runs - and five RBI.

Junior starting pitcher Evan Devico struck out five for the Eagles in four innings.

Saturday: Le Moyne 2, Post 1
The Eagles dropped their first game of the season in a pitchers' duel, 2-1 to Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon in Dinwiddle, Va.

Post's lone run came on a home run from Avots in the bottom of the third. Picone was 2-for-4 on the day.

With the game tied, 1-1 in the top of the sixth, Gabe Levanti hit an RBI double to score the eventual game winning run for Le Moyne.

Matthew D'Ariano received the loss, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on two walks and six hits and striking out four. Zach Place got the win in relief for Le Moyne.
