WATERBURY, Conn. – Junior
Damani Ashton (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer with seven seconds left to give the Post men's basketball team an important Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory 83-80 over Concordia on Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center. The victory clinches a conference tournament berth for the Eagles for the 11
th straight season.
Concordia's Stephen Milhaven split a pair of free-throws with 28 seconds remaining to tie the game 80-80. With a few ticks left on the clock, sophomore
Tyler Desrosiers (Agawam, Mass.) drove into the lane and kicked it out to Ashton in the corner for the winner. The Clippers answer on the other end fell well.
The energy in Drubner was high from the start as Post quickly went up 13-2 behind seven early points from freshman
Tamas Okros (Bristol, England). Concordia answered to knot the game at 13, but a 7-0 run by Post put the Eagles ahead 25-18 with 8:33 left in the first. The Clippers would come back and take 41-36 advantage into the half.
Concordia built a 53-43 lead early in the second half. Post would get within four points three times before three-point play from Okros put the Eagles in front 61-60 with 9:15 remaining.
From there, four ties and three lead changes found the Clippers ahead with 2:32 left. A steal by senior
David Seymour (Amityville, N.Y.) led to a basket by junior
Shay Agboola (Atlanta, Ga.) as Post pulled in front. The Eagles maintained that advantage until the late tie.
Okros scored 17 in the first half and finished with 28 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. Desrosiers added 21 points. Seymour played well on his senior day as he recorded nine points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
The victory was the 500
th in the high school/collegiate coaching career of
Al Sokaitis. Coach Sokaitis has won 81 games at Post.
The Eagles close the regular season on Tuesday night at Dominican. A win by Post will secure the second seed in the North and a home playoff game. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
