Eagles Men’s Basketball Heads Into Break With 87-82 Victory Over Concordia

Mareno Scores Season-High 24 as Post wins home CACC clash

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team came out victorious in its last game before winter break with an 87-82 victory at home against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North foe Concordia on Sunday afternoon. Junior Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) came off the bench and lit up the scoreboard with a season-high 24 points and seven rebounds as the Eagles improved to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in conference.

Sophomore Tamas Okros (Bristol, England) led the team with 12 rebounds and added 15 points for his first double-double of the season. Senior Malcolm Amos (Brookport, Ill.) scored 11 points in the second half and had 17 on the day.

The Eagles trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half as the Clippers built a 33-23 advantage with 8:26 left in the period. Senior Damani Ashton (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) nailed a three for Post to spark a 9-0 run. Ashton also made a late three to close the gap as the teams headed into the break deadlocked 42-42. Mareno was lights out with an 8-for-10 clip from the floor for 16 points.

Down 64-62 with 10:12 to go, senior Tyler Desrosiers (Agawam, Mass.) drove to the hole and hit a baseline layup to trim the lead to two. Concordia quickly launched an ill-advised three pointer, the Eagles snagged the rebound went the length of the court as Okros tied the game with a layup. The baskets were part of a 12-2 run for Post as it jumped in front 72-66 with 4:51 remaining.

Concordia would fight back with a three and a pair of layups by Cedrick McFadden to regain the lead 73-72 with 3:44 left. Desrosiers knocked down a corner three on the Eagles' next possession to give Post a lead it would not relinquish.

The Eagles will return to action at home on December 30 against Saint Anselm. Tip off set for 3:30 p.m. in the Drubner Center.
