Eagles Take Down Top-Seeded Concordia in CACC Quarterfinals

Filho and Strecker score to lead Post to semifinals on Friday

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Post University men's soccer team advanced to its seventh Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Semifinal in the last eight years with a 2-1 victory over No. 1 Concordia in the opening round of the conference tournament on Tuesday afternoon in Bronxville, N.Y. The Eagles will play fourth-seeded Caldwell on Friday.

Post grabbed the lead in the 17th minute as senior Armando Filho (Cataguases, Brazil) connected from the top of the box off a cross from junior Nicholas Strecker (Uncasville, Conn.). The Eagles nearly extended their lead as they earned two corner kicks and Strecker had two chances saved by Concordia keeper Jaime Gonzalez. Post took its 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Eagles had just two shots in the second half, but made the most of their opportunities. Strecker knocked home a corner off the foot of Filho in the 63rd minute to extend the Post advantage to 2-0. The Clippers would not go down easily as CACC Player of the Year Ovan Oakley made the score 2-1 with a penalty kick goal in the 79th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Jon Hanlon (Centereach, N.Y.) had one of his five saves in the closing minutes to help preserve the lead and send the Eagles to the semifinals.

Post and Caldwell will square off in Lakewood, N.J. on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Cougars advanced with a 2-1 win over Nyack. No. 2 Georgian Court and No. 3 Wilmington will face in the other semifinal at 11 a.m. The winners will play in the championship on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
