Waterbury, Conn. - A goal from sophomore Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany) near the end of the first half was enough as the Post University Eagles women's soccer team defeated defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Champion, Philadelphia, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the CACC. The loss knocks the Rams to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the CACC.Â
The first half saw the Eagles putting pressure in the offensive zone throughout, but were unable to get one through until the 44th minute as senior Lexxi Carroll (Plainville, Conn.) passed the ball through the penalty area to a sprinting Mertz, who beat her defender to the ball and put it through on the left side of the net past goalie Erin Tinneny.
The Eagles wrapped up the half with six shots to Philadelphia's two. Carroll, aside from her assist had four shots on the day.
The second half was scoreless as both offenses were unable to get quality shots at the net.Â
Senior Laura Morgan (Brush Prairie, Wash.) finished with four saves for her first win of the season. Tinneny finished with three saves for the Rams.
Up next for the Eagles is a home CACC contest against Concordia on Sept. 15 at 4 p.m.
