Furious Rally In Ninth Advances Eagles In CACC Tournament

Post Scores Four Runs In Final Frame

Wilmington, De. - In a stunning comeback, the Post University baseball team will be moving on to the next round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament it scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, to defeat No. 4 Dominican, 5-4 on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles had lost their first game of the day, 16-3 to Chestnut Hill.

Down 4-1 with one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles began their rally with back-to-back walks to junior Jeff Thoburn (Saint-Lazare, Quebec) and freshman David Sarmiento (Miami, Fla.). After senior Rob Gaertner (Wantagh, N.Y.) pinch ran for Thoburn, CACC second-team member, freshman Alex Wright doubled to right center to score Gaertner, making it a 4-2 game.

Freshman Luke Leonardi (Holbrook, N.Y.) would hit a grounder to third for the second out of the inning. With one out left in their season, sophomore Joey Picone( Washingtonville, N.Y.) came up with the biggest hit in his young career as he singled to left-center to drive in Wright and Sarmiento to tie the game, 4-4.

With the speedy Picone on first, fellow CACC second-team member, senior Dylan Pastor (Hewlett, N.Y.) hit a single to right-center to send Picone on his way. As the ball came into the infield, second baseman Bryan McGuire tried to make the throw home, but dropped the ball, allowing the winning run to score and advancing the Eagles to the next round.

Dominican went up 2-0 in the top of the sixth before Picone answered with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 2-1 game. 

Carlos Lopez then added a two-run homer in the eighth for the Chargers to make it 4-1 at the time.

Senior Don Crook (Meriden, Conn.) got the win in relief, throwing 3.1 innings, striking out five and giving up two earned runs on two hits. Grad student Zach Batchelor (Monroe Township, N.J.) started and pitched 5.2 innings, striking out three.

Corey Pic got the loss in relief for Dominican.

In game one, the Eagles fell behind 4-0 early and didn't get a hit until the sixth inning in the defeat to Chestnut Hill.

Post scored a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-1, but the Griffins scored six runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and five in the ninth to put the Eagles away.

Pastor finished the game going 2-for-5 with one run and an RBI. Junior Erik Rodriguez homered in the  eighth and was (Miami, Fla.) was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run.

For Chestnut Hill, Patrick Campion went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. 

CACC Pitcher of the Year Dominic Raia III got the win, pitching six innings, giving up an earned run on two hits and four walks while striking out three.

Grad student Mike Costello (Manassas, Va.) got the loss, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up four runs - two earned - on three walks and six hits. He struck out six. Michael McLaughlin was 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run. Robert Slagle hit a solo homer for  in the sixth inning for the Griffins.

The Eagles will play the loser of Wilmington and Chestnut Hill at 2 p.m. in an elimination game.
