Post Splits Doubleheader at Nyack

Esque Pitches Shutout

NYACK, N.Y. – The Post University softball team split its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Nyack College on Wednesday, Apr. 9. The Eagles fell short in the first game 4-2 but shutout Nyack 2-0 in the second game. Post ranks fourth in the CACC at 7-3 in conference play and 13-11 overall.

Game One – Nyack 4, Post 2
First-year Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) got the nod for the Eagles in game one. Shaffer threw a complete six innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits.

The Warriors collected three base knocks in the first inning to claim an early 1-0 lead. Kaitlyn Morrison delivered the RBI single, but Schaffer worked out of a one-out bases-loaded jam to stop the bleeding and hold Nyack to just one run.

The Warriors doubled their lead in the third inning when Morrison connected for a solo-homerun to left field.

Nyack tacked on another two runs in the bottom-half of the fifth courtesy of a RBI single by Kelsie Land and a RBI double by Elaina Vasquez. Both runs were unearned and a result of an Eagle miscue in the field.

The Nyack starter, Ashley Manger, silenced the Eagle bats through five innings. Post looked poised for a late inning rally in the sixth when junior Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) singled for her third hit of the game and drove Schaffer home, and Kathryn Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) singled Kresley home.

The Eagles managed one base runner in the seventh inning but fell short 4-2 in game one. Manger picked up her second win of the season and Schaffer dropped to 3-3.

Game Two – Post 2, Nyack 0
Junior Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) was called upon in the second game for the Eagles. Esque went the distance, never allowing a runner past second base. She gave up just two hits and struck out six in a complete-game shutout.

Post jumped on the board early in the second inning when sophomore Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) reached on a Warrior error and Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) came around to score.

Dawson got things going for the Eagles in the fourth inning with a lead-off walk. Cammarano served a single to left field to move Dawson to third, and junior Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) came through with the RBI single to give Post a 2-0 advantage.

Esque came on in the bottom-half of the seventh and retired the Warriors in order to pick up her fifth win of the season (5-3). Nyack's Kim Yano fell to 3-8.

On Deck: The action continues on Saturday, Apr. 11 when the Eagles host Georgian Court University at LaMoy field in another CACC showdown. First-pitched is scheduled for 2 p.m.
