History
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Post University softball team took two from Philadelphia University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader sweep on Saturday, Apr. 18. The Eagles improve to 13-5 in conference play, 19-13 overall, and currently rank fourth in the CACC standings.
Game One – Post 3, Philadelphia 2 Senior
Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) made the start in game one of the doubleheader and threw four complete innings, allowing just two runs on four hits.
First-year
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) made her regular relief appearance and tossed three scoreless innings without allowing a hit.
Sophomore
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) led off the game with a single to the third baseman and promptly swiped second, but it was to no avail as the Eagles stranded one in the first.
Sophomore
Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) started the top-half of the third inning with a double to right center, but again Post could not drive in the runner in scoring position.
Philadelphia struck first in the third inning when senior Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla.) reached on a bunt single to the pitcher and junior Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz.) launched a two-run homer over the center field fence.
The Eagle bats came alive in the fifth inning when Owens punched a single through the left side and made her way to third base before junior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) worked a walk. With two outs and runners at the corners, Schaffer served a RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to one.
Post brought seven batters to the dish in the top-half of the sixth and scored twice on four hits. Junior
Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) singled up the middle to even the score and sophomore
Natalie Lennox (Landenburg, Pa.) delivered the go-ahead RBI single through the left side to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage. Post did all of its damage with two outs in the inning.
Schaffer retired the final six Ram batters in-order to earn her fifth win of the season and the Eagles picked up the victory in comeback fashion.
Game Two – Post 2, Philadelphia 0 The Eagles turned to junior
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) in game two. Esque pitched a complete game shutout to improve on her conference-leading earned run average (1.11). She gave up just four hits and struck out eight and never allowed a runner past second base.
Post jumped on the board early with a two-run second inning. Shaffer got things going with a lead-off single to left field. Sophomore
Kathryn Dawson (New fields, N.H.) advanced the runner on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher and first-year
Korie McDonald (Middleboro, Mass.) laced a RBI double to center field to score the first run of the game.
Later in the inning and with two outs, Cammarano doubled down the left field line to score McDonald and give her team a 2-0 lead.
It was 12 up and 12 down for the Rams through four innings of play. It wasn't until the bottom-half of the fifth inning that Esque gave up her first hit of the game, a single through the left side of the infield.
Philadelphia looked to be threatening in the sixth inning with a pair of singles, but Esque worked her way out of the jam unscathed. She shut the door in the bottom-half of the seventh and became the first Eagle pitcher to reach eight wins on the season.
On Deck: The action continues on Sunday, Apr. 19 when the Eagles travel to Wilmington, Del. to do battle with Goldey-Beacom College in another CACC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
