Pitching Sharp, Eagles Rock Goldey-Beacom

Post Improves to 15-5 in CACC

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Post University softball team held Goldey-Beacom off the scoreboard in 12 innings of play to pick up its second consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader sweep. The Eagles improve to 15-5 in conference play and 21-13 overall to claim the third spot in the CACC standings.

Game One – Post 12, Goldey-Beacom 0 (F/5)
The veteran senior Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) got the start in the circle for the Eagles in game one of the doubleheader. Derby was lights out over five innings of work, allowing no runs and just two hits. She recorded eight of the possible 15 outs by way of the strikeout.

Post jumped on the scoreboard in the top-half of the second inning when first-year Korie McDonald (Middleboro, Mass.) reached on a Goldey-Beacom fielding error and crossed home after sophomore Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) belted a single up the middle.

An inning later, the Eagles padded their lead after posting four runs on three hits. Post capitalized on two Lightning miscues in the field but the big blow was off the bat of sophomore Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) when she hammered a two-RBI double to the gap in right center to give the Eagles a 5-0 advantage.

Post provided more run support in the top-half of the fourth when sophomore Kathryn Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) delivered an RBI single and McDonald hit a run-scoring double to left center.

The Eagles brought nine batters to the plate in the fifth and collected five more runs on just two hits, taking advantage of costly Lightning errors in the field. Three Eagle batters recorded multi-RBI games as Post cruised to its largest margin of victory thus far.

Derby was credited the win and improved to 7-4 on the season.

Game Two – Post 4, Goldey-Beacom 0
Junior Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) was called upon to start game two for the Eagles and she did not disappoint. Esque pitched another complete game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out six.

It was nothing doing for either squad until first-year Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) connected for a triple to right center field in the top-half of the fourth inning to score junior Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) all the way from first.

Dawson refused to leave the runner stranded and slapped a groundball at the Goldey-Beacom second baseman to score Schaffer and give Post a 2-0 lead. The next batter McDonald poked a triple to center field, but the Eagles would not do any more damage.

Cammarano came up with the big two-out hit for the Eagles in the sixth inning going opposite field for a two-RBI double that scored McDonald and Schaffer and doubled the Post lead.

Esque was just as effective in the bottom-half of the seventh, picking up her ninth win of the season and running away with a conference leading 1.02 earned run average.

On Deck: The action continues on Wednesday, Apr. 22 when the Eagles play host to the Bears of Bloomfield College in another CACC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
