WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Concordia College on Monday, Apr. 13. The Eagles shutout Concordia in game one, but the Clippers got even in game two. Post is tied for third place in the conference with an 11-5 record, and stands 17-13 overall.
Game One – Post 6, Concordia 0 Senior
Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) got the start in the circle for the Eagles and pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits.
First-year
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) came on in relief and tossed two perfect innings.
Neither team could get on the scoreboard until the Eagles brought eight to the dish in the bottom-half of the fourth. Post broke out for four runs on four hits and capitalized on a throwing error to score the first run.
Later in the inning, sophomore
Kathryn Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) and first-year
Nicole Venturini (Scituate, R.I.) rocked back-to-back doubles to give Post a 3-0 advantage.
With two outs in the fourth, junior
Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) singled to right field and Venturini came around to score on a Clipper throwing error.
Schaffer and junior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) got things going again for the Eagles in the fifth inning with consecutive singles. First-year
Korie McDonald (Middleboro, Mass.) slapped a grounder to second base to deliver the Eagles' fifth run, and Dawson collected her second RBI of the game to pad a 6-0 lead.
Derby was credited the win and improves to 6-4 on the season. Concordia's Hannah Rubasky (Nanticoke, Pa.) was the losing pitcher and falls to 1-7.
Game Two – Concordia 5, Post 3 Post turned to junior
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) in game two of the doubleheader. Esque lasted 1.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits before Schaffer came on in another relief appearance. Schaffer allowed three runs over 5.2 innings of work.
The Clippers struck first in the second inning when sophomore Carly Mertens (Freeport, N.Y.) launched a two-run shot to center field.
The Eagles answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom-half of the second. Kresley connected for her fifth homerun of the season down the left field line and Dawson served a base knock to center to score McDonald.
Concordia broke the tie game scoring one in the third inning, one in the fifth, and another in the sixth on three timely RBI singles.
Dawson led off the bottom-half of the sixth with a homer to left field to close the deficient to 5-3, but the Eagle offense fell short of the comeback.
Concordia's Sarah Ross (Dunmore, Pa.) improves to 3-3 on the season. Schaffer was named the losing pitcher and falls to 4-4.
On Deck: The action continues on Friday, Apr. 13 when the Eagles play host to the Bears of Bloomfield College in another CACC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
