Eagles Swept In Doubleheader At Dominican

Costello Stellar On The Mound In Game Two

Pomona, N.Y. - The Post University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Dominican on Wednesday afternoon, 4-0 and 2-0. The two losses snapped a four-game winning streak for the Eagles who were undefeated in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference before entering the day.

The Eagles are now 8-11 overall and 4-2 in the CACC.

The first three innings in game one were quiet before sophomore Joey Picone (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and junior Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) hit back-to-back singles with one out to put runners on first in second. However, Dominican starter Peter Martinez struck out the last two batters to end the threat.

Dominican responded in its half of the fourth with RBI double by Mark Vargas off of starting senior Don Crook (Meriden, Conn.) gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

The bats would remain silent for both teams again until the bottom of the eighth when Dominican erupted for three runs thanks two an RBI double by William Seymour, a wild pitch and a bases loaded walk.

Crook was saddled with the loss and is now 2-3 on the season. He did pitch well in his 7.2 innings, giving up seven hits on three runs - all earned - while striking out four. Picone finished 2-for-4 for the Eagles.

Martinez pitched a complete game for Dominican, giving up six hits and striking out ten.

Game Two

Despite another stellar outing by grad student Matt Costello (Manassas, Va.), the Eagles dropped game two, 2-1. Costello pitched an eight inning complete game, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two. He is now 2-1 on the season.

The Chargers scored in the first and second innings, both by way of a wild pitch.

Post threatened in the third after a walk from Picone and single by Rodriguez, putting runners on first and second with two outs, but freshman Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) struck out to end the threat.

The Eagles scored in fifth on singles by freshmen Brendon Emigholtz (West Islip, N.Y.) and Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.).

In the sixth, the Eagles had another opportunity as a double from Walsh and a walk from Dylan Pastor put runners on first and second with one out, but after Musso replaced Miller as a starter, he induced Maxime Robillard into a 5-3 double play, ending the inning.

The Chargers kept the Eagles silent, allowing just five hits and three walks as a staff. Starter Franklin Miller got the win, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up five hits, three walks and striking out seven. Thomas Musso and Corey Pic pitched in relief. Pic earned the one inning save, striking out two.
